Upcyclus
2021
Mixed-use
1 Mays Mdw, Belfast, UK

The term ‘cycle’ is derived from ‘cylus’ in Late Latin. Upcycling refers to the process of transforming old items into new ones. This project involves utilizing a collection of clothing items that individuals no longer wear to create new garments, thereby contributing to the growth of small businesses and creators in Belfast.

To minimize carbon emissions from building materials and processes, it utilizes off-site construction and prefabricated assembly methods. The building materials are also environmentally friendly as they are made from recycled concrete and timber.

Co-library
2022
cultural

Located next to the motorway connecting the west and east of Belfast, the library serves as a community hub where people can access not only books, but also various media like magazines, vinyl and films. There is a lack of cultural spaces for children and elderly in Belfast, hence this library is designed by considering multiple generation and people with different needs.

The overlapping volumes connected through ramps, enables visitors to have a sequential experience. The voids in between each cube enables natural ventilation and daylight. The courtyards play a vital role, where people can sense the seasonal changes.

: preserving the old fragments as sculptural elements adds a unique and symbolic touch and a powerful reminder of the site’s history.

These fragments can evoke a range of perceptual sensations for visitors entering the gate.

Retreat: Tea
2023
Reuse/Adaptive
Townparks, Co. Offaly, Ireland

The new proposal for the St Conleth's Reformatory School in Daingean blends seamlessly with the existing realm, creating outdoor courtyards that provide a transitional space. The complex is divided into four main zones. There is a public space along the wall, and further down towards the centre of the site is a small courtyard with private guest rooms.

The main program of this retreat is the tea ritual. I had the opportunity to talk to enthusiastic locals about revitalizing the town as a tourist destination. The essence of tea lies in its ability to create a serene and natural atmosphere for enjoying it, whether it is a small intimate gathering or a large family celebration. Visitors can unwind and appreciate the tranquillity of nature by spending time at this retreat.
