heritage and histroy of Daingean: spotlighting bog

2023
reserach booklet
Daingean, County Offaly, Ireland

The group research booklet provides essential information about Daingean, highlighting its unique agricultural heritage tied to bog-based turf harvesting. However, it also emphasizes the environmental concerns associated with this practice. During a visit to Daingean, our group engaged with town elders who expressed their desire to revitalize the town for weekend and holiday visitors.

My role encompassed editing and curating the booklet, overseeing both individual and group research efforts. Given the town's unstable, muddy terrain, we drew inspiration from historical precedents in traditional house and building foundations to guide our approach. It delved into the historical aspects of harvesting and farming, which date back to the town's earlier incarnation as Philipstown.  The utilization of a flood map aided our team in estimating flood-prone areas within the town, facilitating informed design decisions.

Our studio adopts a layered interior perspective, interpreting various scales of the town's fabric and context, unveiling a multifaceted landscape of interconnected worlds.
